Your neighbors, on the truck since 1977.

Crains Creek Fire‑Rescue is a combination department, career and volunteer, answering structure fires, emergency medical calls, woods fires, rescue calls and vehicle accidents in Moore and Harnett Counties from Station 23 in Vass. How to reach us, how to join, burn-permit rules, events, and ways to support the department are all here.

Class 3 since December 2022

ISO Class 3, and what it means.

In August 2022 the state rated Crains Creek a Class 3 for homes within five road miles of Station 23, and 9E for homes five to six road miles out, effective that December. The department put it down to “the continuous hard work of our members and Board of Directors.”

Rural departments average a 9S, the Sandhills Sentinel reported at the time. By the state rate bureau's factors, a frame house paying $2,400 a year at Class 3 would pay about $3,430 at 9E.

Members keep it up with Tuesday-night training, county drills at the Sandhills Community College training center, and the static water points their tankers draw from where hydrants don't reach. Volunteers take their certification classes free.

Fall fire season in the Sandhills

Dry leaves, pine straw and wind. Check before you burn.

Fall is woods-fire season in Moore County. Near woods, open burning needs a free N.C. Forest Service permit between midnight and 4 p.m., only natural vegetation may be burned, and nothing should be lit on a windy day. Keep a hose or bucket within reach and stay with the fire until it is out.
